Penile Prosthesis

What is a Penile Implant?

A penile implant is a semi-rigid or inflatable device that is implanted into the penis to treat impotence.  Penile implants (often called a penile pump) is one of several ED treatment options.

Doctors began performing implants in the 1970s. Since then, hundreds of thousands of men have had positive results from implants.

What types of Prosthetic Devices are available?

There are a variety of prosthetic devices that exist today.  There are a variety of different types of prosthetic devices but we commonly use the three-piece inflatable penile implant (shown below).
Three-piece penile implants are among the most technologically advanced devices used today.

This device is completely hidden and unobtrusive.

How does it work?

penileimplantUsing a small incision, your urologist will position inflatable cylinders in the corpora cavernosa (the two parallel chambers of the penis that, when filled with blood, produce an erection).

A small pump is positioned in the scrotum and a reservoir is placed deep in the abdomen.  The reservoir is filled with saline solution. To achieve an erection, gently squeeze the concealed pump in your scrotum several times.  This moves the saline solution from the reservoir into the cylinders.

As the cylinders fill, the penis becomes erect and firm.  To end the erection, simply press a “deflation site” on the pump.  Deflating the cylinders transfers the fluid back to the reservoir and the penis becomes flaccid.

What are the advantages of a three-piece penile implant?

  • Most closely resembles the process and “feel” of a natural erection.
  • Simple, fast inflation preserves sexual spontaneity.
  • Erection feels full
  • Completely concealed
  • Most effective long-term solution
  • Preserves sensation and orgasm
